{"id":685,"date":"2015-02-22T13:24:15","date_gmt":"2015-02-22T21:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/?p=685"},"modified":"2015-02-22T13:24:15","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T21:24:15","slug":"inside-a-1960s-newspaper-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/?p=685","title":{"rendered":"Inside a 1960s newspaper office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In graduate seminar at the University of Canterbury, Professor Neville Phillips fixed me with a stern eye as he returned my latest effort. \u201cYou are getting through your history papers, Miss Dinsdale, on your writing style, not on your knowledge of history.\u201d I flinched, and worried. Graduation was coming up, and I planned to apply for a job on <em>The Press<\/em>, Christchurch, New Zealand\u2019s morning newspaper. Within the next week or two I needed to ask him for a letter of reference. Not only was Prof. Phillips head of the history department, he was a former newspaperman himself, and still had deep connections at <em>The Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I needn\u2019t have worried. Movies about newspapers such as<a title=\"While the City Sleeps\" href=\" http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0049949\/\" target=\"_blank\"> While the City Sleeps (1958)<\/a>, <a title=\"Deadline - U.S.A.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0044533\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deadline \u2013 U.S.A. (1952)<\/a> and <a title=\"Ace in the Hole\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0043338\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ace in the Hole (1951) <\/a>filled me with fantasies about the drama and excitement of the reporter\u2019s life. A great Gothic pile on Cathedral Square, in the heart of Christchurch, the Press Building was a newspaper office out of one of those Hollywood movies: a cavernous newsroom that smelled of newsprint and dust, where telephones jangled, the chief reporter barked commands and the urgent clatter of the Teletype machine signaled a breaking story somewhere in the world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_688\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/compositing-room.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-688\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-688\" title=\"compositing room\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/compositing-room-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"Compositing room\" width=\"249\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picture of Merganthaler linotype machines in a compositing room from the archives of the Nieman Foundation http:\/\/www.nieman.harvard.edu\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sometimes I would be sent on an errand out back to the compositing room, a shadowy cave where enormous Mergenthaler Linotype machines made a deafening clatter. Deeper into the heart of the building, the throb and rumble of the great press itself, and the bustle of loading trucks in the small hours of the morning for long distance runs. When The Press celebrated its 100th anniversary in May 1961, its circulation was 62,000, with subscribers throughout the South Island.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It felt glamorous to work late into the evening, rushing back from meetings to meet the deadline for next morning\u2019s paper. I shared dreams with the other young reporters, all of us with a few scratched notes tucked away for what each of us was sure would be the Great New Zealand Novel. We all had the sense of being part of an old tradition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Among my notes I found this description of the office, written in 1960.
