Their purpose, according to the artist, is to \u201cconnect people to landscape by combining poetry, visual art, and nature observation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I decided to design a poetry box for myself. A simple little house, with just a touch of decoration: a carved spiral to symbolize the continuity of life, and a line of chevrons to signify water. I have no skill at woodwork, but my husband Tony does, and he readily agreed to take my plan and build it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Here it is, mounted on the \u00a06\u201d x 6\u201d gatepost of my fenced vegetable garden. The laminated text is thumbtacked to the back of the box, so that I can change it whenever I want to. For its debut, I placed an empty seed packet on the floor of the house and pinned up a few lines from my poem \u201cWinter Greens,\u201d which is published in my collection<a title=\"Gallery Bookshop website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gallerybookshop.com\/search\/apachesolr_search\/rogue%20wave%20at%20glass%20beach%2C%20eppstein\" target=\"_blank\"> <em>Rogue Wave at Glass Beach<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the gesture of hope:<\/p>\n<p>to remember the taste of fresh-cut salad greens<\/p>\n<p>and act on it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the act of reconciliation:<\/p>\n<p>muscle rhythm of shovel and wheelbarrow,<\/p>\n<p>load upon load to fill the planting box.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the sound of faith:<\/p>\n<p>a rake tamping down soil over new plantings\u2014<\/p>\n<p>snap peas, bok choi, lettuces\u2014<\/p>\n<p>tines on the diagonal, first one direction<\/p>\n<p>then crisscrossed down the line.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The idea came from an article in the Sept.-Oct. 2013 issue of Poets &amp; Writers Magazine\u00a0 about a project to erect small installations, called poetry boxes, in public places.
