This is believed to be a new comet, and is an extraordinarily beautiful sight, with its huge tail trailing. In my homeland of New Zealand\u00a0 I could point out some of the interesting phenomena: the Coalsack nebula, the Magellanic Clouds. An immigrant to the Northern Hemisphere I was still learning the northern sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 1970 I was too busy with children and their needs to study more about the new comet. I\u2019ve now learned that it is considered one of the greatest comets of the past century. It was discovered on Dec 28 ,1969 by an amateur astronomer, Jack Bennett, in Pretoria, South Africa. It seems we have a southern constellation in common. From <a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/full\/1990MNSSA..49..113D\">his obituary<\/a> I learned that Bennett, who died in 1990, \u201cbecame interested in Astronomy when as a teenager, his mother used to point out to him the Southern Cross and the brightest stars and planets, in the evenings after church service, on their way back home.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1759\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verschatse-image.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1759\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1759\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verschatse-image-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verschatse-image-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/Verschatse-image.jpg 446w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Verschatse took this 1970 photograph of Comet Bennett near the town of Waasmunster in Flanders (Belgium).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.astrosurf.com\/antilhue\/Bennett.htm\"> astrophotographer Daniel Verschatse<\/a> notes on his website:<br \/>\n\u201cFor two decades, starting in the late 1960&#8217;s, the southern sky was patrolled by a dedicated South African comet-hunter named Jack Bennett.\u00a0 Using a 5-inch low-power refractor from his backyard he discovered two comets.\u00a0 Jack also picked up a 9th magnitude supernova in NGC 5236 (M83), becoming the first person ever to visually discover a supernova since the invention of the telescope.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1760\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/constantine-coin.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1760\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1760\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/constantine-coin-300x148.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/constantine-coin-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.maureeneppstein.com\/mve_journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/constantine-coin.jpg 382w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roman coins showing the head of Emperor Constantine<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I also learned that Comet Bennett is estimated to have a period of 1700 years. So if it previously appeared in Earth\u2019s sky, it would have been in the third century, about the time that the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great was a baby. Britain was still under Roman rule. Might it still exist by then, and might there be humans left to see it?
